There is no one reason, demand is high – that always means high prices, speculators are driving the prices up artificially, there’s not enough refining capability in the US so we pay more for imported gas, etc. etc.
It’s not going to get better any time soon either, just look at other countries that are paying $8/gallon for gas.

We are still importing gas from the Middle East and as the demand for gas becomes more intense, the prices are sky-rocketing. We have oil in the US, but Bush hasn’t made the decision to drill it yet. Hopefully McCain or Obama will. If that happens, they gas prices will go back to what they were before 9/11.

Corporate GREED! (That and the fact that Democrats keep blocking ALL attempts to start any new drilling in ANWR or off our coasts, and there hasn’t been a new refinery built in this country in over 30 years thanks to the protests of the window licking, tree worshiping, bunny huggers.)

Those that can are making as much money as they can, as fast as they can.
Conditions are ripe for the raping of the world
